Arable farmer Hans Haasken uses Agurotech soil sensors in his potato and onion fields to monitor moisture levels accurately and to apply irrigation more precisely
The sensor data revealed that the sandy soil retained moisture much longer than expected. This allowed irrigation to be aligned with the actual moisture level rather than intuition, resulting in a more efficient approach and the avoidance of two complete irrigation rounds.
"You often think it's drier than it actually is. The sensor clearly showed there was still enough moisture. Without it, we would definitely have irrigated too early."
With irrigation costs of €80 per hectare when using an electric system, skipping one round on a 9-hectare field saves €720. This season, avoiding two rounds resulted in €1,440 in savings. The system also adds convenience: a quick glance at the app replaces a full walk across the fields. The sensors provide timely warnings and operate without issues. The app keeps things simple: "insert the sensor, place the marker, and you're done."
