Optimized irrigation for onion farmers and different potato categories

The optimal irrigation strategy depends heavily on the type of crops. Crops experience stress levels at different amounts of soil moisture and providing the right amount of water specific to crops' needs is crucial. These amounts vary in their growth stages. Onions are an example of a high yielding crop, for which irrigation is crucial, with high sensitivity to optimal amounts of water. Potatoes are also an important crop for irrigation, but the optimal irrigation strategy depends heavily on the type of potato, e.g. seeding, consumption or starch. In this project we have expanded our knowledge in collaboration with Wageningen University & Research with crop models to account for onions and different potatoes. During the farming season of 2022 the upgraded irrigation management system will be demonstrated to a group of onion and potato farmers in the Netherlands.
